The company
My name is Ruth Guise and I started Shibumi in 2004 after sometime living in India and out of my love for textiles. This was the main inspiration behind the business. I simply love fabrics and I wanted to inspire people to wear beautiful coats and jackets casually, rather than hiding them away in cupboards for 'special' occasions.
I come from a family of creatives and tailors. My grandmother, also called Ruth, was the most incredible couture dressmaker and I spent my childhood being awestruck at her ability to create a beautiful dress out of a simple piece of cloth. My cousin is also a well-known designer. After some years of training and playing around with fabrics and life taking its course as it does, I found myself one day in 2004 having this idea and Shibumi was born.
I wanted to include all shapes and sizes into my creations so petite and plus sizes are very important to me. I don't want anyone to be left out of the market. Our size range for women goes from 6-26 and for men from 34-54. A bespoke service is also available. Please do contact me for any bespoke requests at ruth@shibumistyle.com.
Our collection can be seen at shows and events sometimes around the country and we also have a fabulous showroom in Gloucestershire where all the designs can be seen for private viewings and appointments take place. For the shows please check the 'Shows' page for where we will be. We used to do a lot more shows but now the business has grown so much and it's wonderful that so many of you come to the showroom in Gloucestershire as it is a joy to spend time with you face to face. For Appointments please contact info@shibumistyle.com or call the office on 01453 832 098. We also do private sales and by joining our mailing list you will be notified if we do a private sale in your area. We also of course have the wonder of technology and have our simple and beautiful website :)
I absolutely love what I do and am so passionate to spread colour and beauty around the world by dressing real people in beautiful flattering clothes that they feel fantastic in, that they feel themselves in, confident and shining.
I do all the design myself and we also design our own fabrics in the silk and embroidered silk so you really are getting something very unique and definitely not found anywhere else. All the design and patterns are cut here and the fabric design and production is done in India where I used to live and have a small team who work for me in my studio there. We are an ethical company and do not use any factories or unethical labour this is why there is a few weeks lead time on made to order items. This also means we can ship our orders from our tailors in batches to reduce our carbon footprint. All our orders are sent in recycled packaging and we are always trying to fight the concept of 'throw away fashion' by giving our customers inspiration to wear their Shibumi pieces again and again. I have great integrity both environmentally and ethically, in what I do and give back handsomely into our communities. I honestly couldn't do what I do without helping others in this world so please have a look at our section about our Global Charity Support.
Thank you for all your ongoing support that has helped this business grow from strength to strength.
Much love as always,
Ruth
