What to Wear to an Autumn or Winter Wedding: Colours, Fabrics & Outfit Ideas

Autumn and winter weddings are a wonderful opportunity to embrace colour, texture and beautiful fabrics, but dressing for the season does not mean following a fixed palette.

At Shibumi, we believe the season should inspire your colour rather than dictate it.

Autumn naturally lends itself beautifully to burnt orange, aubergine, deep green, teal, smoky blue and rich embroidery, while winter can be particularly striking in jewel tones, icy shades, metallics and deeper colours. But there is absolutely no reason a bright silk or vivid embroidery cannot look wonderful at an October, December or January wedding.

The most important consideration is finding a colour that suits you, makes your complexion come alive and makes you feel wonderful when you put it on.

The same is true of the clothes themselves. Many of Shibumi's favourite silhouettes work throughout the year. What changes for an autumn or winter wedding is often the colour, silk, embroidery, layering and the way the individual pieces are combined.

What Colours Should You Wear to an Autumn Wedding?

Autumn is a particularly lovely season for rich colour.

Burnt orange, rust, burgundy, aubergine, deep greens, teal, gold, smoky blue, brown and cobalt can all sit beautifully within an autumn setting. Embroidered silks can introduce several of these colours within a single fabric, creating a more detailed and individual look.

The natural landscape can provide inspiration too. Deep umber leaves, autumnal greens, burnt oranges and browns can look particularly beautiful at a country wedding surrounded by changing foliage.

That does not mean your outfit has to blend into the scenery.

A bright colour can be every bit as appropriate for an autumn wedding. The season is simply another source of inspiration alongside your own colouring, personal style and the wedding itself.

Shibumi's Favourite Autumn Colour Combinations

One of the advantages of the Shibumi collection is the ability to combine plain and embroidered silks in ways that create something much more individual than choosing a single seasonal colour.

Aqua Teal

Aqua Teal works beautifully with Burnt Orange, Oyster Gold and Smoky Blue.

These combinations allow the blue and green tones of the teal to sit alongside warmer autumnal shades, giving you several different directions depending on whether you prefer something richer, softer or more contrasting.

-

Soft Pistachio

Soft Pistachio is an elegant burnt orange floral embroidery with olive green detail on a  beautiful soft green raw silk.

It works particularly beautifully with the same fabric as it is not ' too much '. See below in the image. Burnt Orange also works well, giving you the choice between introducing a contrasting colour or building a more gentle autumnal outfit wearing the same silk as the dress.

Paris

Paris is an embroidered smoky blue fabric that incorporates tones including burgundy, gold and burnt orange.

Worn with Smoky Blue underneath, it creates an elegant combination where the plain silk allows the different colours within the embroidery to stand out without competing with them.

-

Mineral

Mineral is a particularly smart autumn and winter option.

It can be worn tonally with Raw Mineral for a beautifully considered look, or combined with Dusk to introduce a little more contrast while retaining the depth and richness that works so well at this time of year.

Raphaelite Brown

Raphaelite Brown pairs beautifully with Coffee.

Together they create a rich tonal brown combination that feels particularly at home within an autumn palette without becoming overly literal or themed.

Avalon

Avalon works particularly well with Gold.

The combination introduces warmth and depth while still allowing the green itself to remain an important part of the finished outfit.

Aubergine

Plain Raw Aubergine silk can be exceptionally elegant for an autumn or winter wedding.

It works beautifully in tonal combinations where the richness of the colour and natural texture of the silk are allowed to take centre stage.

-

Magnificent Teal and Pink Shalimar

For customers who want something with greater impact, Magnificent Teal and Pink Shalimar demonstrate that autumn wedding dressing does not have to mean muted dressing.

Strong colour and embroidery can look particularly striking against the softer and darker tones of the season.

-

Can You Wear Bright Colours to an Autumn Wedding?

Absolutely.

There is no reason to restrict yourself to traditional autumn shades simply because the wedding takes place later in the year.

Bright embroidery and vivid silk can look wonderful at an autumn wedding. Colours such as French Cobalt and Burlesque are good examples of how stronger Shibumi shades can bring energy and individuality to the occasion.

The important question is not whether a colour appears on a conventional autumn fashion palette.

It is whether the colour suits you and makes you feel confident when you wear it.

-

What Colours Should You Wear to a Winter Wedding?

Winter opens up another wonderfully rich range of colour.

Jewel tones, burgundy, deep blues, rich greens, aubergine, gold and silver can all work beautifully, as can metallic embroidery, neutrals and icy colours.

Bright red, Wild Orchid and other stronger statement colours can be particularly effective against darker winter surroundings.

A winter wedding does not automatically mean wearing black, navy or another dark shade.

In fact, vivid colour can feel especially uplifting at this time of year.

Late winter may naturally inspire someone towards deeper shades such as navy, but that should never become a rule. The best colour remains the one that suits the individual woman and feels right for the wedding.

Narnia: A Shibumi Winter Favourite

Narnia is Shibumi's bestselling embroidery and deserves a particularly special place within winter wedding dressing.

Its icy quality gives it an almost Ice Queen character that feels wonderfully suited to winter occasions.

It is also a beautiful way to introduce the wider winter palette of icy tones, silver, gold and more glamorous embroidery without relying on conventional dark colours.

For a customer who wants an outfit with real presence during the winter months, Narnia can provide a particularly distinctive starting point.

What to Wear to a Christmas Wedding

A December wedding can be a lovely opportunity to embrace a little more glamour.

Gold, silver, jewel tones, stronger colours and embroidery can all feel particularly appropriate, while a statement silhouette can make the outfit feel special enough for the celebration.

That does not mean dressing as though the wedding has a Christmas theme.

The most successful outfit should still begin with the woman herself. Her colouring, the setting, the wedding palette and her own personal style matter far more than the month on the calendar.

A Christmas wedding can feel glamorous without becoming themed.

Shibumi's Approach to Colour

Shibumi has spent more than two decades working with colour and dressing real women and men for important occasions.

Choosing the right shade is a highly personal part of that process.

We consider a woman's or gentleman's complexion, hair colour and eye colour, but we also want to know which colours she already loves and whether she naturally feels more comfortable in brighter or more muted shades.

The wedding palette and setting can help guide the decision, as can whether the customer hopes to wear the outfit again.

There is no need to rigidly categorise someone into a seasonal colour type.

The aim is simply to find the shade that makes the individual look and feel her absolute best.

Certain blues can make blue eyes appear particularly vivid, while some very pale or muted shades may wash out a fair complexion.

Often the emotional response tells us just as much as any colour theory.

Sometimes a customer puts on a particular colour and immediately looks happier.

That matters.

For customers shopping remotely, photographs can help Shibumi advise on colour choices. In the showroom, the process is even more visual and personal because different shades can be tried and compared directly.

Plain Silk or Embroidered Silk?

There is no seasonal rule saying autumn and winter wedding outfits should be embroidered or that plain silk is better suited to a particular time of year.

Both can work beautifully.

An Embroidered Silk coat with a plain silk dress is a classic Shibumi combination, allowing the pattern and colour of the outer piece to become the focus.

A raw silk coat and plain silk dress can create an equally strong outfit, particularly when the colour itself is rich enough to carry the look.

A raw silk coat can also be worn over an Embroidered Silk dress, allowing the detail of the dress to become more prominent once the coat is removed.

An embroidered silk coat and embroidered silk dress can work when the scale, pattern and balance of the two pieces have been considered carefully.

A cashmere & silk coat over a plain raw silk dress gives you a more relaxed outfit but without taking away style.

Shibumi is particularly known for embroidery, and beautiful cashmeres with the Tree of Life pattern and autumn and winter can be a wonderful time to embrace richer hues.

For customers who prefer something quieter, more subtle embroideries such as Moon, Lilac Lace, Raw Periwinkle, Vintage Rose and Mother of Pearl offer texture and detail without creating an especially bold pattern.

-

Choosing the Scale of Embroidery

Embroidery should be chosen in proportion to the woman and the garment rather than according to a rigid rule about body size.

A very large or bold pattern can sometimes overwhelm a shorter or smaller-framed woman, particularly if she naturally prefers a quieter outfit.

Similarly, a customer with a fuller figure may sometimes feel more comfortable in an embroidery with a more balanced scale.

But this is not about deciding that certain people are allowed to wear certain patterns.

The important considerations are scale, proportion, placement, colour and personality.

The right embroidery should enhance the woman wearing it rather than becoming the only thing you notice.

The Shibumi Dress Coat Is Part of the Outfit

This is one of the most important things to understand when choosing a Shibumi outfit for an autumn or winter wedding.

A Shibumi dress coat is not a conventional winter coat that you wear to the venue and remove as soon as you arrive.

The coat is part of the outfit.

A Lyra, Devi or other Shibumi dress coat is styled together with the dress or separates underneath to create the complete look.

The coats are lightweight occasion garments designed to remain on during the celebration. They are comfortable enough to wear while seated at lunch or dinner and are cut so that their silhouette forms part of the outfit itself.

This is why it is important not to think of a Shibumi dress coat simply as an extra layer for keeping warm.

The dress and coat, or trousers, top and coat, should be considered together from the beginning.

Why Many Shibumi Coats Are Designed to Be Worn Open

Many of Shibumi's signature coats are frock coats designed specifically to hang beautifully when worn open.

This is intentional.

Adding additional fabric and structure so that a coat fastens completely can change the line of the garment when it is then worn open.

Shibumi's open dress coats are designed to fall in a way that is particularly flattering to the female form.

The signature curved-collar family includes the Anya, Bhumi, Lyra and Devi.

These styles share the recognisable gentle curved collar but differ in their proportions and length.

Broadly, the family progresses from the shorter Anya through the Bhumi and Lyra to the full-length Devi, which provides the most dramatic interpretation of the silhouette.

This relationship between the styles allows a customer to find a similar Shibumi character at the length and level of impact that feels right for her.

Can a Shibumi Dress Coat Be Fastened?

Some Shibumi dress coats can be adapted or include buttons, but that does not necessarily mean they are intended to be worn fully closed throughout the occasion.

A Lyra, for example, can be adapted with covered buttons or discreet hooks if a customer particularly wants it to fasten.

If this is required, Shibumi can design and fit it with that intention in mind. Covered buttons can be added on the Lyra or Devi coat styles at the front.

Its natural styling, however, remains as an open frock coat.

Other styles such as the Grace, Aquila and Nehru Coat may have buttons, but they are still generally designed to look particularly good worn open.

The buttons are part of the design of the garment rather than an instruction that the coat must remain fastened.

-

Which Shibumi Coats Are Designed to Be Worn Fastened?

For customers who specifically like the appearance of a coat worn closed, the Trench Coat, Delphine Coat and Avani Coat provide different options.

The Trench Coat is designed as a coat that can be worn fastened.

The Delphine Coat is a double-breasted design that is particularly effective worn done up and can create a strong winter wedding look. It can also potentially be made full length.

The Avani Coat is designed with a waistband and is particularly suited to being worn fastened.

These three styles are silk options.

The Trench, Delphine and Avani cannot be made in Shibumi's cashmere fabric because the cashmere fabric and pattern do not work successfully with their construction.

What If I'm Worried About Being Cold?

Shibumi silk dress coats are occasion garments, not conventional winter coats, and it is important to be realistic about what they are designed to do.

For a typical wedding, much of the day will be spent indoors in a heated venue.

If you would like a little more warmth, a very fine layer beneath a Shift Dress can be useful, while a Shibumi Shawl can provide an additional layer around the shoulders.

Choosing an appropriate cashmere-silk style may also be helpful for cooler weather.

-

The venue matters too.

If a wedding involves a significant amount of time outdoors, perhaps for woodland photographs or an unusual outdoor winter ceremony, that should form part of the styling decision from the beginning.

-

Can You Wear a Shibumi Silk Coat in the Rain?

Shibumi silk dress coats are not waterproof.

They may cope with a quick dash from the church to the car in light weather, but they should not be treated as rainwear.

The purpose of the coat is to create a beautiful occasion outfit rather than replace functional outdoor clothing.

-

Cashmere-Silk for Autumn and Winter Weddings

Cashmere gives autumn and winter customers another fabric option, although silk remains extremely popular for weddings because of its especially celebratory character.

Shibumi cashmere pieces have a softer and more fluid quality and can be particularly appealing for cooler-weather occasions.

Some also feature Shibumi's distinctive Tree of Life motif on the back, creating a statement in their own right.

Examples worth considering include a Devi in Deep Raspberry or Imperial Blue and a Lyra in Dragonfly Green or Porcini.

Exact availability should always be checked before choosing a particular piece.

Cashmere should not be thought of as replacing silk for winter weddings.

Many Shibumi customers still choose silk throughout the colder months because of the colour, structure and sense of occasion it brings.

Classic Autumn and Winter Wedding Dresses

There is no need for an entirely separate category of Shibumi winter dresses.

The classic Shibumi Shift Dress remains an important foundation throughout autumn and winter, just as it does at other times of year.

The seasonal character comes primarily through the colour, fabric, embroidery and way the outfit is styled.

A Shift Dress with a Lyra creates one of the classic Shibumi combinations, while a Devi provides a longer and more dramatic outer silhouette.

An Aquila or Nehru Coat can create a different character around the same simple dress foundation.

Sleeve length may also be adapted where appropriate for customers who would like greater coverage.

Autumn and Winter Wedding Trouser Outfits

Trousers can be every bit as appropriate for an autumn or winter wedding as a dress.

For a more fitted silhouette, Silk Cigarette Trousers work well with a Short Nehru Jacket, Long Nehru, Phoenix Jacket, Bhumi and other appropriate tailored styles.

Atelier Trousers work particularly well with the Anya Jacket, Juno Jacket and Phoenix Jacket, creating a different proportion and a more contemporary trouser outfit.

For something softer and more fluid, Palazzo Trousers with the Willow Silk Top create a beautiful foundation.

Add a Devi Coat when you would like greater impact and a full-length silhouette.

For something less dramatic, a Lyra Coat, Nehru Coat or Grace Coat can create a different balance around the same Palazzo and Willow combination.

The important thing is to choose the trouser and jacket proportions together rather than treating each piece in isolation.

Understanding the Shibumi Coat Families

Understanding how Shibumi's coat styles relate to one another can make choosing the right silhouette much easier.

The Curved Collar Family

The gentle curved collar is a recognisable Shibumi design feature seen across the Anya, Bhumi, Lyra and Devi.

These styles vary principally in their proportions and lengths, culminating in the full-length Devi.

As a family, they have a particularly distinctive occasion and wedding character.

-

The Revere Collar Family

Styles such as the Grace and Aquila use a more classic revere collar.

They can feel somewhat less specifically wedding-focused in character, which gives them particularly good potential for rewearing across other occasions.

The difference between these coat families can be useful if you are considering how occasion-specific you would like the garment to feel after the wedding itself.

-

What to Wear to a Black-Tie Winter Wedding

A black-tie or evening winter wedding can be an opportunity for a more glamorous Shibumi look, but there is still no need to impose one fixed silhouette.

Full-length coats, gold and silver, metallic embroidery, richer fabrics, statement patterns and stronger evening colours can all work beautifully.

The important thing is to find the combination that feels appropriately special while still suiting the individual woman.

A black-tie invitation should influence the level of formality without making every Shibumi customer dress in the same way.
